BMW E30 Street/TimeAttack (turbocharger speculation..)

Inlägg av Miuge »

Hi everybody! I'm a newbie in this forum, but I've been reading threads here for few years now. Somebody might notice some similarities to others builds. :)
I started my car project years ago, it's been pretty quiet, but the last year was the most productive. I've set a goal to get the car on track summer 2015!

Here's a short plan:

Engine:
-M30B35 twincharged (pic)
-Water to air intercooler (pic)

Drivetrain:
-ZF GS6-53DZ gearbox (pic)
-E60 M5 differential (pic)
-E60 M5 driveshaft (pic)
-E34 output shafts

Suspension:
-K-sport Track coilovers (pic)
-E36 M3 spindles front (pic)
-Modified E34 M5 rear axle (pic)
-DTM style adjustment in every corner

Brakes:
-Porsche Cayenne Brembos 6- and 4-pot (pic)
-E46 M3 discs front (pic)
-E34 M5 discs rear
-Pedalbox (pic)

Steering:
-E46 steering rack (pic)
-Toyota MR2 electric power steering pump

Wheels:
-17" 5x120
-255/40 front, 315/35 rear

Chassis:
-FIA rollcage (pic)
-lots of fiberglass

Lots of pictures in photobucket:

Last year we also created an official facebook page for our "team" and you can find all the other builds from the link below:

Nice project ! :thumbright: :thumbright:

But one thing worries me, I don't see any work done for roll center correction at front or rear. Have you thought it ? As you'll lower the car agressively, roll center is totally f..ked up at front and rear plus at rear you'll face changed dive/anti-dive characteristics.

obvious solution at front is to use some spacers under the M3 spindle, like wisefab ( but maybe without no ackerman change ). At rear.... usually people lift whole subframe assembly upwards or extend control arm mounts upwards.

Hi IrmscherRekord, good point there! Yes I have thought of that, I have collected all the information of DTM-era E30's suspension solutions which shouldn't be that bad..
I have already lifted rear axle up for about 60mm which helps with trailing arm position and roll center. (pic) Also trailing arm DTM-style adjustments will allow roll center adjusting (not done yet).
Front spindles will have long pins or spacers which will meet the custom made trailing arms (also not done yet).

I'm happy to answer your questions or hear if you got good tips! :)

Something has happened at the garage, so here's a summary :)

Earlier this year I fitted parts to the engine bay, this is how they settle:

Made the mounting points for the front end parts:

http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x281 ... e71943.jpg

After that I got some parts from machining so I built rear trailing arms ready:

Recently I modified the axle carrier mounting points to meet the modified trailing arms:

A pair of extra fastening to the chassis:

Moved the oil filler cap location from back to the front:

Summer was pretty quiet with the car, but now past few days I've had a good tempo at the garage
I've combined few skipped updates into one:

Oil pan modifications:
Bild

Bild

Bought a stock M30 bottom-end, which will be used with mild boost at the beginning:
Bild

Finished mountings for the oil cooler and radiator. Bottom of the radiator will lay on two rubber pads.
Bild

Welded upper mounts:
Bild

Earlier I started to fit the brake calipers, finally made them fit "deep" enough, needed more cutting of the king-pins.. 17in wheels will be no problem I think :) RF centres needed a 20mm spacer:
Bild

Rear brakes only need adapter plates to fit, measured all critical dimensions today. RF wheel centre might fit even without spacer:
Bild

Adapter will be made of aluminium and it has threaded holes:
Bild

We also did some research of blow-off valves (or dump valves) and noticed cheap ones had serious quality problems and those well known brands are quite expensive..
So... I spent days modelling our own product which finally became something like this:
Bild

..and the second prototype with DIY anodizing in it's cap:

Here's a picture of front king pin modifications:
Bild

Yesterday I got my rear brake adapters and I anodized them dark grey:
Bild

I'm planning to buy Ferodo DS2500 brake pads, haven't heard any good about EBC (though I have a set of greenstuff in my bicycle :D).. Any other suggestions about pads?

Finally after anodizing our dump valve got laser engraved texts in it's cap:

Lot of nice work !

DS3000 or 1.1 might work better if you drive long stints. DS2500 has grip immediately but suffers from extreme heat. Maybe good for time attack.

Thank you!

Only DS2500 compound is available front end, DS2500, DS3000 and DS1.11 to rear brakes.. Front brakes have a lot of pad area and I think it reduces heating a bit.
Do you guys have experience of other brand brake pads??

I combined few missing posts here :)

Place for the IC radiator, that was pretty much the only place because I didn't want to stuff anything extra to the front. Water tank and pump will be placed to the trunk also.
Bild

Fuel tank is now isolated from the cabin, I wasn't really satisfied with the previous version but this turned out better :)
Horizontal tubes support rear wing and vertical ones sway bar fastening points:
Bild

Bild

Today I got my single wiper conversion work, it's pretty compact package compared to orginal system:
Bild

Here's air intake for cabin heater, I'm going to use an universal heater unit. Water should run to direction of the blue arrow and red arrow shows path for air:
Bild

IC is also now mounted, heater will be bolted on top of it:
Bild

Wood workshop! Plywood model almost done:
Bild

After Christmas chassis had a quick wash with water and in some parts we used sand:
Bild

Bild

First update of the year 2015:
Bild

Last couple of weeks we spent finishing our gas turbine bike, ready for the show:
Bild
Bild

..after that I had time for the car. Firstly I did some cutting to complete few welds, but also you'll see air duct for the IC radiator and rear brakes, as well as body needs to be widen couple of centimeters:
Bild

Like our page, it motivates us to work hard! Thank You! :)

Thank you!

Knotan, here's the build thread for the bike. It uses diesel fuel and exhaust gases spin the powerturbine which is connected to the drive chain.
http://jetandturbineowners.proboards.co ... ike-mrt-01
Radiator at the back is only for the water-to-air intercooler which needs it's own water circulation :)

Last week I started to fabricate bodykit, old Group5 cars have given me a little inspiration :)

After that I was able to create air duct for the radiator and brakes. One side left to do..

Thänks Keme!

Last week we took our gas turbine bike to Finnish motorcycle exhibition and we got the OpenClass 2nd price :) Not bad for a first-timer?
http://i187.photobucket.com/albums/x281 ... e28e9d.jpg

This week I continued building my car, naturally... Passenger side needed an air duct too, which became as good as the other side. Here you can see the boxed subframe reinforcements:
Bild

A-pillars got reinforcements too with dimpled holes:
