1475Nm @ 2000rpm on water brake, video.

Inlägg av HenrikGM »

Hi guys.

Thought this video of a trial run of the brake might interest some of you.

We do not know much about the brake, other than its an old item from the military.
Its somewhat different from whats inhere, as its adjustable. The stator part is 2part and can be closed/opened. (the handwheel on the side).

Anyone has some knowledge on this old piece?

The engine is a Meteor V12, 27liter, with twin Holset HC5A. Otherwise stock engine.

det blir svårt att hinna med att ge turbinen vatten då laddatrycket kommer med den veven  jag vet inget om den bromsbänken.

The handle, which is obvious hard to operate under pressure controls two guided half sections of the stator. Like two opposed "C". Fully closed they become a "O".

We are guessing that the split stator and the water level inside the brake is used to control the absorbtion simultaneously, however operating the stator becomes impossible under load. 1500Nm makes is nearly impossible, and we are hoping for more than double that.

The water on the other hand, is fitted strangely. The water intake is in the bottom near center, and the outlet in the top. This makes to me no sense, as the brake then always will be full.
With a full brake the stator has to be fully open to allow starting, otherwise the engine cant really start due to the brake effect.

Only reasoning would be to reverse the waterflow, however, this would mean to redo the original piping. But perhaps this was wrong?

When you use a stuska type brake, you have the waterinlet in the center, and the outlet in the bottom, then you throttle the outlet a fixed amount, and then add more or less water compared to the throttled outlet, right?
Of cource with the possibility to adjust the outlet to some extent.
You would always want to secure flow through the brake for cooling, regardless of the brake power needed.

It will be spectacular to dyno it under boost.
We have 130kpa abs with 4x 50mm WG fully open at 2000rpm. Cant wait to see how it behave when the WG is closed and boost is allowed to increase.
Guess we will go for baseline boost of 0,8bar and add 0,8 more from TPS 70 - 100% through setpoint controlled bleed valve. To have a chance to throttle it also under boost. It revs quicker than anything ive ever seen.

Small update:

The brake is actually pretty neat for this purpose once you have understood its function.
Simply start the engine, crank the handle to close the gallery inside and adjust the rest on the waterflow.

Measured 3400Nm@1840rpm with it. Could go further, but the time ran away. Very confident it can brake 6000+Nm.

Anyway, this is the first real pull with sled.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=84vMl_kwXSQ" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
starts at 2700rpm@225kpa ~4300nm, and ends at 1600rpm.
