Saabel Garage; Rekord V8 and #740LS

Post by keme »

Evolution of Opel Rekord in finnish way.

In the begining there was 1.7 engined Opel Rekord C -66

Image

After first summer the original engine got ripped off from engine bay.

Image

Then it required a bit of welding. After that the hell broke loose. CIH engines are too old and powerless, so something new had to be done.

Image

20XE with OHC 240 Getrag was fitted in Rekord.

Due to high cost of throttle bodies turbo charging was only reasonable option to achieve resonable power.

At this stage 1 Ihi VF29 was fitted under hood.

Image

Exhaust pipe needed a bit of improvisation.

Image

Though it went quite near front tire it did NOT heat up the tire nor front fender.

Then I wired up the engine for Tatech Pro 6 engine management system and "rusted" the valve cover

Image

Then just before end of summer 2008 I got engine running!

Image

Picture is taken in Opel club finland summerparty 1/4 mile line up :)
btw. I won

After that event I registered the car and the regiseration went rather easily.

At this point the setup was this:

- 20XE with Z20LET pistons
- Tatech Pro 6 engine management system
- Ihi VF29 turbo charger
- 630cc injectors
- Audi Coil On Plugs
- OHC 240 Getrag
- Opel Commodore A LSD rear axle
- Spax KSX Shock absorbers in every corner

In 2008-2009 winter I assembled roll cage, Sparco EVO bucket seats and 4-point harnesses.

Summer 2009
Image

Tested few times quarter mile and results were a bi disappointing. Best time 14.19s and highest end speed 171 km/h.

Because of that hell broke loose before the end of summer.

Image

Saab B204 engine, adapter plate and BMW ZF gearbox.

Image

Toyota Hiace axle and four link kit from Summit

Image

First version of exhaust manifold with Holset HX40Super

Image

Firewall done.

Image

At this point.

- Saab B204 engine
- BMW ZF gearbox from e36 M3
- Sachs -618 clutch
- Toyota Hiace axle with LSD

Hopefully running on street on next summer.

Sweet! I have an Ascona B with b204l + hx40. Very good combo.

Some questions. How did you solve clutch/flywheel? Special flywheel?

I have visited that site few times, but it seams to be quite small and there is not so much discusion about anything. Just few posts a week.

For flywheel I was planing to use the one for Saab 240mm clutch, but modify that to fit Sachs -618 cluch in it with sintered plate. I am propably going to do all weldings first and then focus on clutch problem.

Jag bor i Tammerfors.

I even got something done, but still have some welding to do. Should be almost possible to get shock absorbers assembled in next week.

In front I have Opel Commodore B 271x22 discs and brake calibers. I am not planing to change those for now. Maybe if I manage to make extra time, I could fit some better brakes in front too.

Rear brake calibers will come from Saab 9000 with BMW e36 280x10 discs. I am using those Saab calibers, because they have mechanical hand brake which is oblicatory in Finnish registeration inspection.

Today I lowered front end about 50mm, but forget to take picture.

Wow. 3 months since last update and almost nothing has happened.

Rear brakes are done with Saab 9000 brake calibers and BMW 280x10 discs.

Image

After all I decided to do also new front brakes. Easiest solution seams to be VW Golf 288x25 disc and Saab 9000 brake caliber. Disc needs a little manufacturing and brake caliber a adapterplate to fit, but relatively easy to do.

I was thinking to build a Watt-linkage to rear axle. After few calculations I didn´t concider it any longer, because I can build long enough Panhard and it will move axle one centimeter to the side at maxmum inbound. It is also a lot easier to do than Watt.

Because I am using a adapter plate between engine and gearbox I had to find a thicker flywheel. It was found from Saab 9-5

Image

A little bit of lathe and it will become few kilos lighter. There will also be Sachs -618 pressure plate fitted and made place for bearing for gearbox main shaft.

Few pictures of cooler fitting, retro hood locks and 7x17" steel wheels.
