identify hydraulic lifter issue, volvo 16v B234F head.

Hi All;

I have noticed a few differences with the lifters in one of my spare heads.

The "plunger" inside the lifter acts differently.

#1 these are solid with thumb pressure, but the plunger can be pulled a few mm out and move back and forth.

#2 These are nearly solid with thumb pressure, but slight "springy". High thumb pressure can sag the lifter a mm or so max. Can easily be pulled out.

#3 These are really soft with thumb pressure and sort of bottoms out by thumb. Plunger moves freely.

Anyone know how the lifters are suppose to behave when pulled from an engine that has been standing for a long time?
Im guessing i cant really diagnose any of them without being really sure the lifters have been exercised under oil pressure.
It could seem like the #3 lifters would be in a condition where the non return valve isent keeping tight, or perhaps the chamber inside simply is without oil now.

Anyone that can shed some light to this?

They are supposed to be easy springy...they're the same as those funny motors I posted the other photos of and one of your ancestors living near a place called "Knutsford" showed me how to "rebuild" them....and make them work.
It's all about them being absolutely spotless inside the center "button'.
Gör så här
Bang the down on a nice clean block of wood till tou can get the center thing out easilt...Look at it and somewhere in the side is a little hole that allows oil pressure to get in and out..Poke at that with a dental pick and spray Brake-Kleen or something horrible and eco-un-friendly and squeeze it and poke and spray.
Soon enough you will maybe get some little turds of old crusty oil out. Spray soem more, wipe down, spring it with thumb pressure till its springy..poke it back into the main body.
Done.

The oil pressure is what holds the thing "out" so it has to get in...head is hot so some oil gets cooked...lifter stops springing..
In the 7-9 of those funny other motors I've built maybe 65% of all the tryckare were "stum"

By the way, why are you using Aenglish? Are you from the very bottom of Jyland near 'anglen'?

I though this was a primarily Swedish language forum? Have you gotten shit for spelling a word wrong?
